Portholes

A universe enclosed in a perfect circle, portholes were like windows through which I saw both the sea and the land. This perception, as if in a tondo, has always remained in my memory. In order to trace it on paper, I had to learn how to draw a circle in a rectangle once again. Yes, in a word, find the right gesture and fullness and overcome the anxiety of outlining a map of the world by hand, of being some sort of unscrupulous god. Too bad if the circle is not always perfect, if it is unsure, if it is broken off or too clear. It is already an excellent exercise to give one’s hand freedom and the desire to start over and over again.There is something reassuring about it as it encompasses what is still unknown, what is going to appear inside of this kind of cocoon.

Land and water, land and water – in a circular space – new worlds appear, sometimes far away or sometimes so close that you have the impression you can land there: looking through a porthole is magical! It’s a kind of kaleidoscopic vision composed of fleeting impressions, shadowy movements around the edges and luminous specks – I can still see into the distance through the porthole, way and beyond …
